EPDs

Environmental Product Declarations

What is an EPD?

An Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) is a standardized document that communicates the environmental impacts of a product based on a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). EPDs are developed in accordance with international standards such as ISO 14025 and EN 15804, providing consistent and comparable environmental data.

Typical environmental indicators included within an EPD may include:

  • Global warming potential (carbon emissions)

  • Energy consumption

  • Water use

  • Resource depletion

  • Waste generation

  • Other lifecycle environmental impacts

EPDs help project teams make informed decisions using verified environmental data rather than generic assumptions.

Transparent Environmental Data for Better Material Decisions

Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) provide verified, transparent information about the environmental impacts of construction materials and products across their lifecycle. As sustainability requirements and embodied carbon expectations continue to grow, EPDs play an increasingly important role in supporting responsible material selection, green building certifications, and carbon reporting.

RCI supports manufacturers, suppliers, designers, and project teams in understanding, developing, and applying EPDs to improve environmental transparency and support sustainable building outcomes.

Why EPDs Matter

EPDs support more informed and transparent material decisions by providing verified environmental data across a product’s lifecycle.

As the building industry places greater emphasis on sustainability and carbon reduction, EPDs are becoming increasingly important for:

  • Embodied carbon reduction

  • Material transparency

  • Green building certification compliance

  • Sustainable procurement requirements

  • ESG and carbon reporting

Many green building frameworks, including LEED and other international standards, recognize and reward the use of products supported by verified EPDs, helping projects align material selection with broader sustainability and environmental objectives.

RCI's EPD Advisory Services

EPD Development Support

We support manufacturers through the EPD development process, helping collect and organise the data required for lifecycle assessment and documentation.

Life Cycle Assessment (LCA)

Our team performs LCAs to quantify the environmental impacts of products across raw material extraction, manufacturing, transportation, use, and end-of-life stages.

PCR & Standards Guidance

We assist clients in understanding Product Category Rules (PCRs), applicable standards, and program requirements to ensure compliance and consistency.

Third-Party Verification Coordination

We support coordination with independent verifiers and EPD program operators throughout the verification and publication process.

EPD Application in Green Building Projects

We advise project teams on how EPDs can support material selection, embodied carbon strategies, and green building certification credits.
